Manu Prakash, a professor of bioengineering at Stanford University, has developed a lifesaving tool that costs just 20 cents.

The 'paperfuge' is a hand-powered ultralight centrifuge, inspired by one of the most basic of human toys – the whirliwig.

The invention can diagnose diseases like malaria and HIV within minutes without using electricity.
