The Handmaid's Tale has recruited a Get Out and West Wing star to play the role of a new Commander in season two.

Bradley Whitford has been cast as Joseph Lawrence, who is also the architect of Gilead's economy, according to Deadline.

And in typical Handmaid's Tale fashion, he sounds pretty terrifying. Described as gruff and dishevelled, he also has a "mad genius" vibe and a sly sense of humour that makes him a confusing prospect for his Handmaid.

Whitford isn't the only established actor signing up to the acclaimed show, with 24's Cherry Jones recently cast as Offred's (Elizabeth Moss) mother.

"We've been thinking about her a lot. June's mother is a big character in the book and representative of an interesting kind of feminism that was seemingly more of that time," said showrunner Bruce Miller.

"June's memories of her mother and her activism are very vibrant in the book, so we've been talking about her from day one of season one, and it just didn't seem like enough time to do her justice."

On top of that, we recently learned that season two will feature flashbacks to explore more about Emily's (Alexis Bledel) past, much like we saw with Offred in season one.

The Handmaid's Tale returns to Hulu in the US on April 25. Details about the UK return date to Channel 4 are TBC.
