'Hang On, Buddy!' Fishermen Motor Close to Swimming Deer

A man who was out fishing on Smith Lake in Alabama on November 2 maneuvered his motorboat near a deer as the wild animal swam its way to Goat Island.

Footage recorded by Dennis Robbins shows the animal swimming along. “So we’re out here fishing today, and this is what we ran across,” Robbins can be heard saying.

The boat then moved close to the animal, with Robbins uttering words of encouragement – “Hang on, buddy” – to the deer.

Robbins told Storyful that the deer was most likely going to the island to eat. “It’s full of hardwood trees,” he said. “They drop acorns that deer love.”

He said that it was very common for deer to swim, but added, “I’ve seen deer on the edge of Smith Lake, but never in it.” Robbins did, however, tell Storyful that the animal was not in distress and that the waters were shallow. Credit: Dennis Robbins via Storyful
