The Inbetweeners star Joe Thomas got ‘bum waxed’ for new film The Festival – and fiancé Hannah Tointon ‘enjoyed’ watching

Hannah Tointon may be gearing up to marry Joe Thomas — but that didn’t stop her taking pleasure in him being “put through the wringer” on the set of their new film.

She plays Thomas’s ex-girlfriend Caitlin in The Festival, which was penned by writers of The Inbetweeners, the cult comedy in which the couple first met.

“There’s a lot of things Joe had to do for the film,” she said. “At one point they were going to pierce his nipple for real. I think he thought, ‘This is going too far now’. I just found it really funny. I witnessed him having his bum waxed. I found that enjoyable.

“It was funny witnessing him get put through the wringer.”

The film was shot in the Mendip Hills in Somerset where producers built a huge festival set. Tointon, 30, said she got a “shock” on location as she has only “been to one festival for an afternoon”.

“I know it’s weird but it didn’t register that it was going to be in a field … We did a lot of the interior stuff first and I thought, ‘This is lovely’, then suddenly we were covered in mud,” she said.

“It was such a shock to the system how cold it was. The night shoots are the worst. You’re freezing. I never stay up late. I’m not good with cold and no sleep.”

Tointon, whose older sister is former EastEnders star Kara Tointon, said playing a character in her early twenties was easy as she feels younger than her age.

“I’m constantly told I look about 12,” she said. “It’s slightly gone a bit up so I’m proud they now think my average age is 19 or 20. I’m still inept and not knowing what I’m doing. I don’t think I’ll ever be grown up. Maybe one day it will just kick in.”

The Festival is in cinemas today
