Reports suggest Disney's deal to buy Fox is reaching advanced stages – and if it goes through, it means Disney will own Fox's slate of Marvel characters including the X-Men and Fantastic Four.

With their Avengers behemoth rattling along – and promises that after Avengers 4 we could expect at least 20 more movies "that are completely different from anything that's come before," according to Kevin Feige – we're sure that if the deal happens, we'll see an Avengers/X-Men crossover.

But what will this mean for Wolverine? Surely one of the most popular X-Men characters, he was made iconic in cinema by Hugh Jackman. But Jackman has previously said that following Logan, he would definitely be hanging up his adamantium claws after nine movies playing the superhero.

That said, could an encounter with the Avengers lure him back? Talking to Collider, Jackman gave his thoughts on the possible Disney/Fox deal.

"It's interesting, because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking, 'That would be so great', like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together," he said.

"And every time I saw an Avengers movie, I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like, punching them all on the head.

"But it was like, 'Oh well, that's not gonna happen,' and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline - it was just the possibility of it and who knows what's gonna happen, obviously - I was like, 'Hang on!'

"But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there."

Scott Eastwood has already thrown his hat in the ring if the deal goes through and Disney does come searching for a new Logan.

Logan director James Mangold isn't quite so sure the deal will be a good thing, though. Talking to Deadline, he expressed worries that folding Fox into Disney's thus-far not R-rated superhero model would be detrimental.

"The real thing that happens when you make a movie rated R, behind the scenes, is that the studio has to adjust to the reality that there will be no Happy Meals. There will be no action figures," Mangold said.

"The entire merchandising, cross-pollinating side of selling the movie to children is dead before you even start. And when that's dead, it means you're making a grown-up movie."

Fox took risks on both Deadpool and Logan, which were made for smaller budgets than the Marvel tentpoles but which were also successful both commercially and critically.

We don't doubt that Disney knows what it's doing – but we hope if the acquisition does happen, the studio will stay true to Wolverine and to Deadpool too.
