Who is Anisah Ahmed?
Anisah Ahmed is an ex-lawyer who tried to destroy the reputation of a barrister with whom she was having an affair. In an elaborate and sinister scheme, Ahmed plotted to frame her ex-lover Iqbal Mohammed with false rape, kidnap and stabbing claims.
Anisah first made contact with Iqbal on LinkedIn in 2013, with her profile saying she was a young lawyer from Oxford. Ahmed followed up her request with a series of probing questions about Iqbal's career and salary.
After her messages were ignored, Ahmed would try to connect with Iqbal again three years later, with a simple message of 'hi.' The pair began to share flirty messages and engaged in a nine-month-long affair.
Ahmed claims she was unaware that Iqbal was married during this time - she contacted Iqbal's wife when she found out. But Ahmed's plan didn't stop there.
Why was Anisah Ahmed jailed?
Furious at Iqbal, Ahmed forged emails from his work account threatening to post intimate pictures of her online. During the subsequent police investigation, which saw Iqbal arrested in front of his colleagues, she falsley accused Iqbal of rape.
She went on to orchestrate her own kidnapping, enlisting an ex-boyfriend to assist in the disturbing scheme. But she wasn't finished yet.
When her ex-boyfriend refused her request to stab her, she took control and drove the knife into her own thigh. In the ambulance on her way to the hospital, Ahmed told police she’d been abducted by a hitman hired by Iqbal, even mentioning her ex-boyfriend’s name.
This came after she called the police, claiming she had escaped from a killer. Eventually, her story fell apart under scrutiny and she was arrested before being handed a life sentence.
Where is Anisah Ahmed now?
In 2021, Ahmed became the first person to receive a life sentence for perverting the course of justice. Seven months later, her sentence was overturned by the Court of Appeal to 10 years - but she's already been freed.
She is currently under a home detention curfew, requiring her to wear an electronic tag. There are limits to when she is allowed to leave her home.
Iqbal Mohammed was reportedly informed of her release by The Sun. He told The Sun: "I can't believe nobody bothered to bloody tell me this before. It's unbelievable. I've been completely left in the dark."
After the charges against Iqbal were dropped, he was able to reconcile with his wife, after a period of separation. The Real Fatal Attraction, which dives into Ahmed’s crimes, will air on ITV on Wednesday, November 13 at 9pm.
