Patrick Swayze famously declared, "Nobody puts Baby in a corner!" in Dirty Dancing, but actress Jennifer Grey's unusually low profile since the 1987 film left many fans wondering where she did go. (Not the corner, at any rate.)
It's been 29 years since that legendary dance lift and the actress has since dated some of Hollywood's biggest A-listers, won a US reality TV show and starred in no fewer than 11 TV movies. But it was a dramatic "nose job from hell" that meant that her star faded and her burgeoning career took a very different path.
What she did first
Jennifer's early career saw her bag roles in some stone-cold '80s classics. She made a fleeting appearance in Francis Ford Coppola's The Cotton Club before teaming up with Patrick Swayze on Red Dawn. You'll also remember her from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, playing Ferris's snarky sister who cops off with Charlie Sheen.
Then she had that nose job
Jennifer famously had surgery in the early '90s, an operation that left her unrecognisable to friends and family – and has frequently been accused of scuppering her career.
"I went into the operating room a celebrity and came out anonymous," she told The Mirror in 2012. "It was the nose job from hell. I'll always be this once-famous actress nobody recognises because of a nose job."
She hasn't shied away from acknowledging the regrettable rhinoplasty, which became an ongoing joke in her short-lived 1999-2000 sitcom It's Like, You Know… "I decided to make fun of this, to make my fiasco become my reality. After all, it's not cancer, and it's absurd that just a nose job could wreak such havoc," she told The Washington Post.
She starred in Friends
Jennifer's TV guest spots in the '90s are many, chief of which was playing Rachel's old school friend Mindy in an episode of Friends.
Their friendship was severely tested thanks to philandering Barry, who Rachel walked out on on their wedding day and later went on to marry Mindy. The character reappeared in season six but with Jana Marie Hupp taking over the part from Grey.
She danced with the stars
Jennifer was a contestant in the 2010 season of Dancing with the Stars, starting out strongly, experiencing a stress and injury-related wobble in the middle only to claim the winning leotard. A chain of events not unlike the plot of Dirty Dancing, come to think of it (only with fewer unwanted pregnancies).
In 2011, she was also a guest judge on Strictly Come Dancing, standing in for Len Goodman.
She married an Agent of SHIELD
After high-profile relationships with Matthew Broderick and Johnny Depp, Jennifer married Clark Gregg in 2001. That's right, her other half is Marvel high-flyer Agent Coulson, who's appeared in multiple Avengers instalments and Agents of SHIELD.
Jennifer and Clark have a 13-year-old daughter together, Stella, and even shared the screen in 2006's Lifetime movie The Road to Christmas.
She locked lips with her female co-star
In case you thought Jennifer was stuck forever in the '80s (and how dare you!) she proved that she knows which way the TV on-demand wind is blowing by showing up in Amazon Instant Videos' Red Oaks a comedy... set in the '80s.
The show saw her stealing a kiss with Teen Wolf actress Gage Golightly, who was born six years after Dirty Dancing was released. "I'm just the girl who has everything. I made out like a bandit," she said on a press tour. The show was renewed for a second season which was released this November.
Well, if you've still got it, why not work it?
