It's a yappy ending for Narla the dog who was rescued by police on patrol at the side of the A66 just inches from being hit by a car.

Despite efforts to find her owners no-one came forward to claim her - but PCSO Kim Harrison fell in love with the pretty pooch and decided to take her home. The drama began on October 16 when Durham Police's Neighbourhood Policing Team in Darlington were on their night time Operation Trailblazer patrols when they got reports of a scared pup dashing through traffic next to the A66.

Sgt Chris Smith and his team managed to get hold of her just in time to save the pup from a close encounter with a passing vehicle. She was identified through her ID chip as being called Narla.

Now, in an update, a spokesperson for Durham Police said: "Despite countless efforts by the dog warden to trace her original owners, no-one came forward to claim her. Stuck in the kennels for weeks, the future was looking bleak for Narla.

"But that's not where her story ends. We're thrilled to share that Narla has found a loving new home with our very own PCSO Kim Harrison. Kim took Narla home on Wednesday, and she is settling in fantastically - getting all the love and care she deserves.

"A huge thank you to Sgt Smith for his quick thinking at the time, to Andy the dog warden for his persistence and dedication and to PCSO Kim Harrison for providing Narla with her forever home. We love a happy ending."
