The Government has confirmed that digital driving licences will hit our smartphones later this year as part of a new government app. This digital transformation means you can use your phone to show your licence and prove your age.

Set for a summer release, the fresh Gov.UK app is poised to be your one-stop shop for government services and includes a new Gov.UK "wallet" feature where you can stash digital versions of official docs. Starting things off will be a veteran card taking up residence in the wallet, with driver's licences joining the ranks later in the year as part of a pilot scheme.

The app will use your smartphone's security, like facial recognition - the same tech we use for quick purchases, to keep your digital wallet locked tight. The Government says that using the digital version is purely optional, with physical copies still up for grabs for the traditionalists among us.

Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle gives us a glimpse into the future, declaring that by 2027 the Government plans to use the wallet for all of digital documents, including DBS checks and an array of other government credentials.

He explained: "Gov.UK Wallet will mean that every letter or identity document you receive from the government could be issued to you virtually. For those who opt to use Gov.UK Wallet, it will be easier to prove entitlement to benefits or verify their age when purchasing alcohol or DIY equipment, with more security and trust than ever before."

The new development is not only convenient but also offers the potential to streamline dealings with public services by empowering individuals to manage their personal data. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has been vocal in her enthusiasm, describing the innovation as a "game-changer for the millions of people who use their driving licence as ID."

She went onto say: "The innovation puts power back in the hands of the people, making everyday interactions faster, easier, and more secure. We are delivering on the Plan for Change by making public services work for everyone." Embedded within a broader scheme aiming for a £45 billion in efficiency savings, this digital revolution envisages the integration of AI tools into the Civil Service, enhancing operations across Whitehall.
