The Government is set to revolutionise the traditional driving licence by introducing a digital version that can be stored on smartphones, offering a convenient proof of age for users. This innovative leap is slated for later this year through a new official Gov.UK app scheduled for release this summer.

The app will act as a gateway to various government services and feature a "wallet" for holding digital renditions of government-issued documents.

The Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle highlighted the Government's target: By the close of 2027, an array of essential documents, encompassing DBS checks and all manner of official credentials, are expected to be integrated into the app's wallet function.

He explained: "Gov.UK Wallet will mean that every letter or identity document you receive from the government could be issued to you virtually. For those who opt to use Gov.UK Wallet, it will be easier to prove entitlement to benefits or verify their age when purchasing alcohol or DIY equipment, with more security and trust than ever before."

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has championed the new tech as a "game-changer for the millions of people who use their driving licence as ID."

She further commented: "The innovation puts power back in the hands of the people, making everyday interactions faster, easier, and more secure. We are delivering on the Plan for Change by making public services work for everyone."
