If you feel your TV viewing schedule has been missing something ‘pre-apocalyptic’ then you’re in luck as thanks to the BBC a brand new sci-fi crime thriller is set to arrive on screens.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new series.

What’s it about?

Imagine discovering that the world faces certain destruction in just five years, what would you do? Hide under the covers and hope it all goes away? Well thankfully, that’s not what detectives Charlie Hicks and Elaine Renko do.

After happening upon proof of the impending apocalypse that’s being suppressed by the government, the pair set about trying to discover as much as they can about the mysterious cosmic event threatening the earth - all while grappling with ruthless Security Service operatives.

Who’s in the cast?

The cast is headed up by Agyness Deyn as Renko and Jim Sturgess as Hicks. Deyn has been quietly transforming her modelling career into an acting one for the past few years - and as a primetime BBC crime drama, Hard Sun is one of her most high-profile roles to date.

Opposite her is Hicks who was ‘annoyed’ when he first read the script as he’d been planning on taking a break to work on some music, but felt the show was “too good to turn down”.

While sadly not making a cameo appearance to inform us in his uniquely wistful way that ‘we’re all made of stars’, Professor Brian Cox has been on had to offer his wisdom to the Hard Sun team on all things cosmic and apocalyptic as the show's specialist advisor.

Where was it filmed?

Shooting for the series took place between London and Wales, with Parys Mountain in Anglesey’s large former copper mine appearing in the series, and the capital’s Southbank and Shepherd’s Bush also playing backdrop to several scenes.

When’s it on?

The first episode of the six part series starts on Saturday, January 6 at 9.35 pm on BBC One.
