DC's Suicide Squad movie was a big financial success for the franchise, so it's no surprise that they greenlit a bunch of movies focusing on their villainous characters off the back of it.

What is interesting, however, is that the filmmakers are now distancing their new projects from that movie (which had a negative critical response, but it didn't seem to bother people at the time).

Speaking to Total Film to promote the Harley Quinn-focused Birds of Prey movie, writer Christina Hodson said: "Obviously, yes, it's a character we have met before, but it's really its own story, and that's kind of how I approached it.

"I just tried to take myself off-leash. I fell in love with this character, and then all of these other new characters. And I just created a brand new story that felt like its own thing, and that doesn't have to feel like it follows one or the other."

When it comes to the actual Suicide Squad sequel, titled The Suicide Squad, no one is actually calling it a sequel. It's apparently going to function as a "total reboot", even though a lot of cast members (including one whose character died in the first film) are coming back.
