Steve Coogan transforms in trailer for new C4 show Channel 4

Channel 4 has released a first-look trailer at Brian and Maggie.

The new two-part series recreates the 1989 interview of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Harriet Walter) with Brian Walden (Steve Coogan) – the late Labour MP and notorious political interviewer.

The trailer shows Walter and Coogan, unrecognisable as Walker and Walden, as having a close friendship which ended abruptly following the now infamous interview.

The trailer shows the pair's friendship beginning with Walden's first ever TV interview on Weekend World, with Thatcher proving very particular about camera angles and props.

Following their first meeting the two hit it off and seem in regular contact with one another, until the disastrous 1989 interview, which is teased right at the end.

"1989. When Brian and Margaret came together for their last-ever TV interview, little did they know they were about to embark on one of the most famous political exchanges of all time," the show's synopsis teases.

"The 45-minute showdown became a national talking point and set in train a series of events that ended with Margaret’s resignation. Afterwards, they never spoke again..."

Brian and Maggie is written by James Graham, best known for Sherwood, who wrote the screenplay based on the book Why is This Lying Bastard Lying to Me?: Searching for the Truth on Political TV by Rob Burley.

The drama is directed by the BAFTA-winning Stephen Frears, known for A Very English Scandal and Philomena (which also starred Coogan).

In the UK, the two 60-minute episodes will air on Channel 4 this year, with a release date for Brian and Maggie yet to be announced. BBC Studios is handling the international distribution of the series.

Brian and Maggie will air on Channel 4 in 2025.
