Harry Kane targets Jimmy Greaves' Tottenham goal record after eclipsing Teddy Sheringham

Harry Kane has set his sights on surpassing Jimmy Greaves as Tottenham’s leading scorer after going past Teddy Sheringham as the club’s top scorer in the Premier League.

Kane scored twice in Saturday’s 4-0 win against Everton at Wembley to move to 98 Premier League goals and one ahead of Sheringham.

The 24-year-old has 127 goals in all competitions and believes he can overtake Greaves’ record of 266 goals.

“Of course,” he said on Monday. “I always set my targets a bit smaller, maybe month by month every couple of months, but if I carry on the way I am going then, hopefully, yes.

“To be ahead of Teddy is amazing, especially considering I have not been playing in the Premier League that long. Teddy was a big hero of mine growing up.

“It is something I am very proud of but onto the next one… keep winning games and, hopefully, I will keep scoring. Let’s just keep adding to it and see how many we can get.”

Greaves scored his 266 goals in 379 appearances and Kane has taken 198 games to reach 127. He says he is happy to stay in North London as long as the club start winning trophies and Spurs are reportedly ready to break their wage structure to keep him.

Kane is the first player to score 20 Premier League goals this season and he warned defenders he wants to get even better.

“I always watch the 100 club on television and to be two goals away is exciting,” he said. “Hopefully I do it as soon as possible and then it is onto the next 100. That is what it is about. Always trying to be better and always trying to strive for more.”

It was a record-breaking day for Kane but it was the irrepressible Heung-Min Son who led Tottenham to victory against Everton. The South Korean, who scored his 11th goal of the season and set up Kane for his first, is often overshadowed by Kane but his importance to Spurs cannot be understated.

“He has been amazing all season,” said Kane. “He is really growing in confidence and is just getting better and better every game.”

Fifth-placed Tottenham have hit form in the race for a top-four finish and are three points behind Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea and five ahead of Arsenal

Spurs have won six and drawn once since they lost 4-1 at Manchester City last month and Kane said: “It is important to keep that momentum going.

“February is a really tough month for us. We play Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus in the Champions League as well. So it is important we keep winning and take it into February.”

Tottenham have flown to Spain for a training camp in Barcelona before their trip to Southampton on Sunday.
