Harry Styles has reflected on his short-lived relationship with Taylor Swift.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, he recalled his surprise when photos from their date in Central Park went everywhere in 2012.

"I mean, you're a little bit awkward to begin with. You're on a date with someone you really like. It should be that simple, right? It was a learning experience for sure. But at the heart of it – I just wanted it to be a normal date," Harry explained.

Following their break-up in January 2013, the two have seemingly referenced their time together in their songs, with two of Taylor's – 'Out of the Woods' and 'Style' – considered to be about Harry.

One Direction fans also speculated that the band's 2015 single 'Perfect' was about Taylor: "And if you're looking for someone to write your break-up songs about / Baby, I'm perfect."

Harry noted that he doesn't know if Taylor's songs are about him, joking that "the issue is, she's so good, they're bloody everywhere".

He did admit that he writes from his experiences, much like anyone else: "That's what hits your heart. That's the stuff that's hardest to say, and it's the stuff I talk least about. That's the part that's about the two people. I'm never going to tell anybody everything."

Harry added that if he does write songs about his past relationships, he would much rather them be about their time together, rather than any bitterness.

"Certain things don't work out. There's a lot of things that can be right, and it's still wrong. In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the time together," he outlined.

"You're celebrating the fact that it was powerful and made you feel something, rather than 'this didn't work out, and that's bad'. And if you run into that person, maybe it's awkward, maybe you have to get drunk… but you shared something.

"Meeting someone new, sharing those experiences, it's the best shit ever. So thank you."

Harry recently celebrated his debut single 'Sign of the Times' going to No.1 in the UK and performed a new song from his self-titled album on Saturday Night Live.
