Harry Styles Calls Gay Rights ‘Fundamental’

Harry Styles has never been one to hide his support for the LGBT community so when the “Sign of the Times” singer appeared on a French talk show and was asked about gay rights, he had no problem saying how he felt.

Appearing on the show “Quotidien,” Styles was first asked why he doesn’t like to discuss politics. The singer confirmed that he doesn’t enjoy talking about the subject, saying, “To me, I think anything that brings people together is better than what keeps people apart.”

The One Direction member was then asked why he’s so supportive of gay rights, if he avoids politics. The pop star went on to say that gay rights do not “feel like politics” to him, instead, Styles said, “Stuff like equality feels much more fundamental. I feel like everyone is equal. That doesn’t feel like politics to me.”

In 2013, after a concert was protested by the Westboro Baptist Church, Styles took to Twitter to show his support for equal rights, tweeting, “Despite the company outside, I believe in equal rights for everyone. I think God loves all. Thanks for coming to the show though.”

The singer also displayed his support during a concert in St. Louis, Missouri, performing while wearing the jersey of ex-NFL player Michael Sam. The athlete, who was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in 2014, became the first publicly gay player to be drafted into the NFL.

While the singer prepares for the debut of his first solo album, during an interview with Rolling Stone, Styles didn’t rule out One Direction returning eventually. “I love the band, and would never rule out anything in the future,” he said. “The band changed my life, gave me everything.”

According to Styles, he was the first one to bring up the idea of the band taking a break, saying he “didn’t want to exhaust” the fan base. “If you’re shortsighted, you can think, ‘Let’s just keep touring,’ but we all thought too much of the group than to let that happen. You realize you’re exhausted and you don’t want to drain people’s belief in you.”
