Set for the top spot? Harry Styles is neck and neck with Ed Sheeran for number one: BBC Radio One

Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran are currently neck and neck in the race for this week’s number one spot.

The gap between the pop star pair is closing as Styles’ debut Sign of the Times is now just 8000 units ahead of Sheeran’s Shape of You, with two days to go.

The One Direction star started the week with a 15,500 lead over the closest competition, which was Sheeran’s Galway Girl.

After a huge surge, Sheeran’s smash hit Shape of You has now climbed back up the charts and is currently sitting in the number two spot.

Styles’ first solo single has already sold 47,000 units across all formats this week, while Shape of You is currently at 39,000.

Sheeran’s comeback track has dominated the UK singles charts this year, having held the top spot for 13 weeks.

The British singer is set to rival Drake’s impressive 15-week run at the number one spot , which was just one week away from breaking the all-time record set by Bryan Adams.

Styles nearly missed out on ‘hundreds of thousands’ of streams this week due to a reported ‘Spotify streaming error’, which left fans unable to search for the track.

A source told the Sun: “This is a nightmare start for Harry’s solo career and his record label won’t be happy.

“The potential ramifications are big and it’s likely he has missed out on hundreds of thousands of streams as a result. That could really affect his chart position come Friday.

“He is Number 1 at the moment but that’s only because his streaming stats haven’t been included yet, and they have more weight.”
