Yahoo News Harry Styles Joined a Los Angeles Black Lives Matter Protest
Harry Styles showed his solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement by joining a Los Angeles protest yesterday. A fellow protester wrote about seeing him in a Twitter thread and explained why it meant so much to her to see Styles doing more to show support for the movement and his black fans.
The fan, Angela, wrote: "Hi, I just marched at a Black Lives Matter march next to Harry Styles and before any of you try to f*cking come for me for 'praising him' and giving him too much credit, lemme clarify this in a fucking thread so y’all can hear it from a black fan’s perspective: I’ve spent 8 years of my life supporting 1d [One Direction]/Harry and for the past 8 years. I have attended predominantly white crowds, and felt uneasy and uncomfortable at every show because I hated the feeling of being 'white washed' and seeing no other black fans around. When the whole issue around him not noticing the BLM flags at his first tour came around, I was ANGRY as F*CK. I was disappointed and felt unacknowledged. It felt like that discomfort and unease I felt at all his/1Ds concerts were justified bc he couldn’t even acknowledge a flag. And most of y’all are right! We shouldn’t praise white people for doing the bare minimum and for simply: not being racist. But to see people like Ariana [Grande] and Halsey be out here and to f*cking have the universe shine its light UPON ME TO BE NEXT TO ONE OF MY FAVORITE PEOPLE? I feel f*cking VALIDATED!!!! I feel like he’s learning and doing his part to do better. I watched this man chant with us and kneel with us and most of you do not know how much it f*cking means to be black and see this from the person you’ve been supporting for years!!!!!"

Angela added that she got the chance to briefly thank him for being there and encouraged others to attend protests near them, donate, and sign petitions. She shared a Google doc with links to petitions and places to donate, which you can view here.

Styles made a statement on social media about the Black Lives Matter movement on May 30. He wrote:
I do things every day without fear, because I am privileged, and I am privileged every day because I am white. Being not racist is not enough, we must be anti racist. Social change is enacted when a society mobilizes. I stand in solidarity with all of those protesting. I’m donating to help post bail for arrested organizers. Look inwards, educate yourself and others. LISTEN, READ, SHARE, DONATE and VOTE. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. BLACK LIVES MATTER.
