Alabama's aborted execution comes under court review

Alabama was planning to execute Doyle Hamm, 61, on Thursday for the 1987 murder of a motel clerk but called it off due to venous issues it said could not be solved before a death warrant expired at midnight. The case in Alabama comes after states including Oklahoma and Arizona have had botched executions that raised questions about death chamber protocols in the 31 U.S. states with the capital punishment.

Over 100 Central American migrants rescued from truck in northern Mexico

More than 100 Central American migrants, including dozens of minors, were rescued from a truck found abandoned in a violent region of northern Mexico near the U.S. border, authorities said on Friday. The migrants, from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, were suffering from dehydration and asphyxiation when soldiers came across the truck in Tamaulipas, where migrants often attempt illegal border crossings. Every year, thousands of Central Americans seeking to flee violence and poverty in their homeland use Mexico as a conduit to the United States, often transported by human traffickers in dangerous conditions that can be fatal.

Woman Died Due to Extreme Heat From Bedbug Treatment, Negligence Lawsuit Claims

An 82-year-old woman's family who claims a bedbug extermination treatment killed her is suing the pest control company as well as the owners of the Houston apartment complex in which the woman resided. Bedbugs are typically killed with a combination of aerosol spray and heat treatment. EU's Tusk warns Poland must stop anti-Semitic remarks

Poland's ruling party must do everything it can to stop anti-Semitic remarks that are hurting Poland's standing in the world and putting its interests at risk, European Council President Donald Tusk told a news conference on Friday. Tusk, a former Polish prime minister, said after he met Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki that discussions with other European leaders showed the situation of Warsaw was "very serious". "I told the prime minister the situation ... has a direct impact on Polish interests, Poland's reputation and Poland's standing in the world," Tusk said, adding that Morawiecki understood that.

3,200 jobs at risk as Toys R Us UK lines up administrator

The directors of Toys R Us's British chain are preparing to appoint administrators early next week in a move that will threaten more than 3,000 jobs on an already-troubled high street. Sky News has learnt that bosses from the ailing chain met officials from the Pension Protection Fund (PPF (Shenzhen: 300258.SZ - news) ) on Friday to notify them of the impending move amid fading hopes of a rescue deal. Toys R Us UK has been engaged in a frantic search for a buyer for the last month following weak Christmas trading which has left it with little hope of paying a £15m VAT bill due on Tuesday.

Volkswagen settles U.S. diesel owner lawsuit on eve of trial

Volkswagen AG's U.S. unit on Friday resolved a lawsuit brought by a North Carolina man whose diesel emissions case was set to be the first go to trial on Monday. The settlement comes days after Virginia state court Judge Bruce White rejected a request by the German automaker to delay the trial over excess emissions because of what it called "inflammatory" comments made by a lawyer representing car owners that it feared would prejudice a jury. Virginia Lawyer Mike Melkersen, who represents David Doar, the North Carolina man along with more than 300 other U.S. VW diesel owners, said the case had been dismissed by agreement but he declined to disclose the terms.

Corporate partners cut cord with NRA as gun control debate rages

The fallout over this week's shooting rampage at a Florida high school started to take its toll on National Rifle Association's roster of corporate partners on Friday as a half dozen companies severed marketing ties with the gun advocacy organisation. The exodus of corporate names, ranging from a major insurer to car rental brands and a household moving company, occurred after the NRA launched a counter-offensive against a student-led campaign for tighter U.S. gun ownership laws. At the same time, gun control activists are stepping up pressure on Amazon.com Inc and other online streaming platforms to drop the online video channel NRATV, featuring gun-friendly programming produced by the NRA.
