Harvey Weinstein’s defence lawyer quits ‘amicably’ ahead of May trial

Harvey Weinstein and his defence lawyer Benjamin Brafman have parted ways.

A representative of the Hollywood producer said they had decided it “amicably”, and the lawyer wished him “the best of luck”.

Weinstein, 66, is charged with raping a female acquaintance in 2013 and performing a forcible sex act on a woman in 2006. His trial in New York is scheduled to start on May 6. He denies all allegations of non-consensual sex.

Mr Brafman must remain on the case until judge James Burke signs off on the separation.

A joint statement from Mr Brafman and Weinstein said: “Both parties have agreed to part ways amicably…Mr Brafman reiterated his belief that Mr Weinstein would be exonerated of the charges that have been filed against him and Brafman personally wished Mr Weinstein the best of luck as he defends the case.”

Weinstein is also being investigated by police in London and Los Angeles. His other accusers include actress Salma Hayek, who alleges sexual harassment, and model Cara Delevingne, who said he tried to kiss her.
