Hatton Garden Heist Was Twice As Big As First Thought - £20 Million Not £10 Million

Apart from being yanked from a 1960s Michael Caine crime caper, the Hatton Garden safe deposit heist has turned out to be much bigger than initially thought - £20 million of gems and cash stolen instead of £10 million.

Scotland Yard detectives now believe a ‘significant amount’ of the items stolen from the safe deposit are still missing, reports the Evening Standard.

Police had initially thought that they had recovered the majority of the jewellry and money in three holdalls, worth approximately £10 million.

It is only after months of cataloguing the stolen goods, has this new assessment been reached.

This new information was revealed in a pre-trial hearing for one of the nine suspects at Woolwich Crown Court.

Prosecutor Philip Evans told the Court: ‘It’s fair to say the amount which has been recovered is very significantly less than the amount taken.

‘The process of identifying those figures is long and complex but the Crown states a significant amount of jewellery is outstanding.’
