Hatton Garden robbery drama shocks viewers with bin trick
This week, ITV has been bringing us its real-life crime drama Hatton Garden, about the 2015 heist that saw elderly thieves run off with up to £200 million (they've all since been arrested though, don't worry).
Last night's (May 22) episode saw the robbers break into the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company and steal millions' worth of cash and jewels. But how did they get the swag out of the building undetected, we hear you ask.
In wheelie bins, of course.
If that's not daring enough, the gang left the loot in the bins outside overnight. OK, the bins were superglued shut and it wasn't a bin collection day, but viewers were still gobsmacked at the sheer audacity of their plan.
#HattonGarden they left 2 bins with millions in them outside for 2 days and they were untouched. I didn't bring my bin in 2 minutes after collection and it got stolen 😂

Can't believe they had the balls to leave in the bins behind the house. I wouldn't have been able to sleep at night knowing it was there #HattonGarden

Know it’s true but wheelie bins full of gold etc and pulled upstairs, in and out of vans and none of them fit !#hattongarden

I’m lifting all the bin lids as I’m walking from now on 😂 #HattonGarden #itv

I’m thoroughly enjoying #HattonGarden but my ponderings. Would you REALLY put a wheelie bin full of millions of pounds worth of cash, jewellery, gold etc in an alleyway in London. Wouldn’t you have two ‘look out’ men in case one fell asleep? Most of the filming is in Waterloo? 🤔

The drama, which concludes tonight on ITV, is fronted by Harry Potter actor Timothy Spall and also stars Kenneth Cranham and Brian F O'Byrne.
The show has been a long time coming, however, having been postponed by ITV in 2017. It was then rescheduled for 2018, before being postponed yet again.
Was it worth the wait? Well... viewers thought that the first episode was a bit slow, but now we imagine that everyone is going to spend their days looking at wheelie bins and wondering if they should open them up just in case there's a load of stolen jewels inside.
No-one would, of course. Us Brits can't even make eye contact on the Tube.
Hatton Garden concludes tonight (May 23) at 9pm on ITV.
