Note: contains spoilers for The Haunting of Hill House season one.

Stranger Things fans felt cheated when it was revealed that the show's third season wouldn't be hitting Netflix at Halloween like season two did back in 2017, and would instead be delayed until the summer of 2019.

So while the Duffer brothers iron out the wrinkles and work out how the hell they are going to sustain yet another journey into the Upside Down, Netflix has provided a raft of creepy shows that are ready and waiting for you to sink your teeth into, one of which is The Haunting of Hill House.

Based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel of the same name, the 10-episode adaptation follows the Crain family as they move into their new home.

Parents Hugh and Olivia – along with their five children Steven, Shirley, Theodora and twins Nel and Luke – want to restore the ramshackle property and sell it on for a big profit. But exceedingly dark things start happening and it quickly becomes apparent that Modern Family this is not.

With a number of questions still left unanswered at the end of the first series, can we expect another chapter? Or is this the end of the road for the Crains?

Here's everything we know.

The Haunting of Hill House season 2 release date: when can we expect it?

The Haunting of Hill House only hit Netflix on October 12th, so it makes sense that the people behind the show would want to hang fire on committing to a second season until they know how many people stuck with it.

But the story has certainly been left open for a possible return, and several cast members are keen for a comeback.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who plays Luke Crain, said: "It'll be interesting to see what Mike [Flanagan] and Netflix and Paramount, what they all decide to do.

"There's millions of different options – they could continue on and have it a couple of years on and how the remaining Crains are dealing with it. They could go back and tell the story of the Hills at Hill House."

"There's so many options that they can toy with here, which I think makes it so exciting to be part of a show like this."

And Kate Siegel, who plays Theodora, would also love to get the thumbs up: "Absolutely, I would run back to that family."

Former Game of Thrones star Michiel Huisman, who plays Steven, the oldest of the five siblings, also told Digital Spy that he would be on board: "I have no idea...what that [season two] would look like. I'm up for anything.

"This could be more for me, but that really depends on the audience; if it's going to be successful or not, if people like it. The cool thing about Netflix is we can very easily see if people watch it or not. And then we'll start a conversation about whether or not we'll make season two."

As for what the second chapter could look like, Thomas suggested a ''more tropical'' setting.

"Exactly," Kate added. "The Haunting of the Four Seasons Maui!"

It's not the most gothic of locations, so we can't really see director Mike Flanagan (Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil) going for that, but you never know.

Huisman's idea, however, feels a lot more on brand: "We could go back to the house and I'm the gatekeeper of the house, maybe. Or we could do more of an anthology."

The cast have revealed that there are a handful of crafty Easter eggs hidden in the season finale that suggest the show could be returning – and if we do get a second season, we would bet a solid pound on the latest offering debuting in the run-up to Halloween. But to make that deadline, they had better get cracking…

The Haunting of Hill House season 2 cast: who's in it?

The narrative on the show jumps between past and present, which not only means a number of the characters are played by two different people, but if season two was given the green light, we could see all of the characters return – that would mean comebacks for Hugh Crain (Henry Thomas/Timothy Hutton), Olivia Crain (Carla Gugino), Steven Crain (Paxton Singleton/Michiel Huisman), Shirley Crain (Lulu Wilson/Elizabeth Reaser), Theo Crain (McKenna Grace/Katie Siegel), Luke Crain (Julian Hilliard/Oliver Jackson-Cohen), and Nell Crain (Violet McGraw/Victoria Pedretti).

And there's always the possibility of some new faces, too.

The Haunting of Hill House season 2 plot: what will happen?

There were two deaths in season one – both Olivia and Nell took their own lives, which means that their spirits will remain in the house for eternity. But Hugh, who opted to stay behind with his wife and youngest daughter, as well as Steve, Shirley, Theo and Luke are all alive – so logistically, there is more than enough manpower for a return.

With the plot jumping between past and present, it's probable that Olivia and Nell will also play a part.

And despite discovering that the Red Room is in fact the stomach of the house, devouring its inhabitants in a bid to keep them there forever, we still don't know about the origin of the house itself and why it became evil.

There is every chance that a second season would take us even further back to investigate its true beginnings, as well as exploring what happens to Steve, Shirley, Theo and Luke away from the house.

The Haunting of Hill House season 2 trailer: when can we see it?

With a second season currently unconfirmed, don't expect a new trailer anytime soon.

But with a respectable helping of positive reviews doing the rounds, watch this space.
