Haunting of Hill House star Henry Thomas has joined the DC Universe live action series Stargirl.

According to EW, Thomas has been cast in the recurring guest-star role of Golden Age favourite Dr Mid-Nite, also known as the surgeon Dr Charles McNider.

Dr Mid-Nite is a medical pioneer and founding member of the Justice Society of America (JSA), who, alongside his trusty owl, acts as the team's resident doctor and detective.

Hill House star Thomas is also known for playing Elliott in Steven Spielberg’s E.T, and has starred in FX’s Better Things, History’s Sons of Liberty, and Netflix's Stephen King adaptation Gerald’s Game.

Stargirl recently cast SWAT star Lou Ferrigno Jr in the role of Hourman (aka Rex Tyler) – a thrill-seeking superhero and master chemist who can manifest super strength for just one hour a day.

Ferrigno Jr and Thomas join Brec Bassinger in the new series, who will play the titular role of Stargirl, aka Courtney Whitmore.

The character is an ordinary teen who discovers that her stepfather used to be a superhero and borrows his Cosmic Staff, becoming a superhero herself.

Stargirl comic creator Geoff Johns, who will be writing the first episode of the show, previously opened up about casting Bassigner.

"There is no other character in comic books more special to me than Stargirl, and after searching far and wide I can say there is no other actor on the planet that embodies her more than Brec Bassinger," he said.

"Brec's warmth, strength, humour and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is. I'm so grateful she's signed on for the role."

Stargirl is set to hit the DC Universe next year.
