Haunting images of America's best-preserved ghost town

In the build-up to Halloween those hunting for a real-life ghost town need look no further than this haunting spot.

Bodie, Calif. — which can’t be photographed at night without special permission — is one of the best-preserved ghost towns in America, still featuring the abodes of the miners who inhabited it more than 100 years ago.

Matthew Christopher, 39, renowned for his photography of abandoned locations, visited the site numerous times over the past 12 months, capturing the Milky Way glittering above ramshackle houses, clapped-out trucks and stores that once served Bodie’s locals.

The settlement was founded in 1859, following the discovery of gold in the hills east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. (Caters News)
