Damon Lindelof could be returning to HBO to work on a Watchmen TV series.

According to Deadline, the Leftovers and Lost creator is in "very early talks" to develop an adaptation of the comic book series for the premium television network.

The project is said to be in the "early deal-making phase", with Lindelof eyeing up a showrunner role.

Watchmen originated as a 1986/7 limited DC Comics series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, and was made into a film in 2009.

The movie was directed by superhero supremo Zack Snyder and stared Malin Akerman, Patrick Wilson and Matthew Goode.

HBO was previously thought to be considering an adaptation of Watchmen with Snyder at the helm in 2015, but the project did not move forward and Snyder is no longer attached.

It may be a good thing HBO is involved in any plans to bring the series to television too, as the film version of Watchmen was a slavishly faithful adaptation of the source material, and contained some brutal violence and a nudie scene or two.

Watchmen follows the adventures of several retired superhero vigilantes in a dystopian 1985.

However, when a colleague is murdered, the last remaining vigilante Rorschach leads his own sprawling investigation, enlisting the help of his otherwise retired friends.

Together, they uncover a conspiracy that could change the course of history as we know it. Naturally.

The comic was resurrected for the controversial prequel series Before Watchmen in 2012 – without Moore's blessing or involvement – to decidedly mixed reviews.
