HBO’s Harry Potter Series Launches ‘Inclusive, Diverse’ Casting Call for 3 Lead Roles
You have until Halloween to submit your rugrat to star in HBO’s Harry Potter TV series, which begins filming in Spring 2025 with an eye on a 2026 premiere date.
A casting call making rounds and confirmed as legit by HBO seeks children who will be age 9-11 in April 2025 (and residents of the UK or Ireland) to fill the roles of the titular boy wizard and his BFFs Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.

Described as a “faithful adaptation” of the massively popular J.K. Rowling novels, the TV series was announced in April 2023, with Rowling attached as an executive producer.
“We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting,” the casting call states in large, bold type. “For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated.”
Applicants are asked to submit one video, 30 seconds maximum, in which they prepare a short story or poem (but “nothing from Harry Potter”), to be read in “your own accent.” In a second video of up to a minute in length, the candidate is invited to “[tell] us a bit about yourself” and describe “a family member, friend or pet that you are particularly close to.”
In June 2024, HBO announced that Francesca Gardiner (His Dark Materials) would serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner of the as-yet-untitled series, while Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones) will direct multiple episodes and exec-produce.
The plan is for the series to span a decade, though it has yet to be confirmed if that equates to 10 seasons, or simply a 10-year lifespan for the show.
TVLine previously shared some “dream casting” ideas for many of the franchise’s most iconic characters.
