A primary school headteacher has written to parents asking them to stop their children urinating in the playground.

Kat Church, the head of Hannah More Infant School and Grove Junior School in Nails, Somerset, says that a ‘number of pupils’ were being allowed to urinate outside as their parents picked them up after school.

She has branded the behaviour as ‘totally unacceptable’ and has now addressed the matter via the school newsletter.

She wrote to parents: ‘Sadly it has been brought to my attention that at the end of the school day a small number of pupils are allowed by parents to urinate in the school playground.

“Clearly this is totally unacceptable behaviour particularly as all pupils and families know where the toilets are in school.’

The schools, located on two sites, combined in March 2012 and have a total of around 400 pupils aged between five and 11.

Speaking after the letter was sent, Mrs Church said there had only been one incident of a child urinating in the playground reported to her by parents.

She added: ‘It was only on one occasion and the matter was raised by a small number of parents.

‘If parents have concerns we deal with them and the matter has been addressed immediately.

‘This type of behaviour is not at all representative of the school. Our ethos is growing and learning together, aspiring to excellence.

‘We all work hard together to make both schools a brilliant place to be.”

The issue is now set to be discussed by the school’s governing body when it meets later this week.

Ann Tonkin, the school’s chair of governors, said: ‘This type of behaviour is unacceptable in what is a public place.

'Not only that but it is very unhygienic if children are urinating in areas where other children play.

'If an adult was to behave in the same way in a public place there would be consequences.

'Parents need to ensure that they teach their children that it is not acceptable to urinate in a public place.

'There are plenty of toilets in the school building for children to use.

'Staff would be more than happy for a child to come back into the school after lessons finish to use these facilities if they needed to.

‘There are some occasions when parents have to deal with a child who needs the toilet in an emergency when there are no facilities nearby.

'This however, in this case, is not the situation.

'There is no reason for a child to have to urinate in the playground.’

Both schools were rated as 'good’ by Ofsted inspectors following their last visit in May 2014.

Mrs Church is not the first headteacher to write to parents about 'etiquette’ issues.

At another school in nearby Yeovil, Somerset, staff at St Michael’s Academy wrote to parents about children arriving at school 'dirty and unkempt’.
