Heart Radio presenter's cancer spotted by listeners who first noticed symptom
Heart Radio's Jamie Theakston has expressed his gratitude to observant fans who spotted symptoms that led to his cancer diagnosis.
The popular presenter had previously informed his audience that he would be taking a break from broadcasting due to voice issues. However, a biopsy subsequently confirmed he has stage one Laryngeal cancer, which affects the larynx located in the throat.
Earlier in the month, Jamie took to Instagram to thank his listeners for their concern about his voice change, the Mirror reports. He wrote: "Sooo – a few of you listeners have noticed my voice hasn't sounded right these past few weeks – I've got you to thank... Got it checked – Doctors found a lesion on my vocal chords which I've had removed this weekend – thanks for all the kind messages – should be back on my feet soon – in the meantime..." followed by an emoji with a zipped mouth.
Jamie has courageously stated that although he has been diagnosed with cancer, he refuses to let it define him. In a heartfelt message posted on social media and broadcasted on the Heart Radio breakfast show, he declared: "As you know - I recently had an operation to remove a lesion from my vocal cords.
"The biopsy has identified this as stage one Laryngeal cancer. So - I have cancer - but cancer doesn't have me. The prognosis is very positive and I'm hoping to be back with you in October."
Jamie Theakston then announced that he will be taking a temporary break from his radio show after receiving his diagnosis. In an emotional message, he said: "Until then I've been told to give my voice a rest and leave you in the mostly capable hands of JK and Amanda. Big thanks to them and all the Global family who have been unbelievably supportive. Be thankful for this day, and when I next see you, I've got a great story to tell..."
His co-host JK reassured listeners that Jamie's prognosis was "very positive" and that he was expected to make a full recovery and return to work in the coming weeks.

Amanda Holden became tearful as she shared the news, calling Jamie a "King" and saying: "Even though it's been identified as cancer, it is not all bad news." She added: "He's told us to hold the fort and that the show must go on."
JK added: "Jamie has an amazing team that are going to get this sorted. He's going to be OK, he's hoping to be back with us very soon." He also praised Jamie for being a positive influence on listeners.
Fans of the Heart Radio Breakfast Show took to social media to send their well-wishes to Jamie. One listener wrote: "Sending all the best wishes from Spain, the medicine and experts are incredible currently, you have the power, Jamie."
One fan commented: "What a lovely family you all are at Heart and I'm sure Jamie will be feeling the love and positivity radiating out to him this morning." Another chimed in with: "Come on Jamie you have got this, wishing you to get well soon and hope you have a speedy recovery."
