'Heartless' thieves raid Leeds not-for-profit

'Heartless' thieves have broken into a surplus food social supermarket in Leeds.

The burglars struck Surplus to Purpose (SToP) shortly before 4am on Tuesday, November, 26, when two brazen thieves broke through several security doors and entered the warehouse. Surplus to Purpose (SToP) is an innovative social enterprise tackling the critical issue of food waste.

Founded to create a more sustainable and socially responsible approach to food, the non-profit organization transforms surplus food destined for disposal into valuable resources for communities, events, and schools. The owners of 'Surplus to Purpose' in Torre Road, Burmantofts, said the thieves took two safes from the offices, along with food and money.

Police have since arrested one man and were able to retrieve the two safes. Officers have asked anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 3.56am today (Tuesday), police received a report of an ongoing burglary at Burton Business Park in the Burmantofts area of Leeds.

"Males were seen to run from the premises as officers arrived and enquiries at the scene led to the arrest of a man on suspicion of burglary.

"He remains in custody at this time while enquiries continue. Anyone with information which may assist this investigation is asked to contact police in Leeds on 101, or by using the livechat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website.

"The crime reference is 13240643034. Information can also be reported anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or online."

Taking to Facebook, the non-profit organization penned: "The only way for us to try to recuperate our losses, is to support you to support us."
