A heartwarming video has emerged of a firefighter receiving a hero’s welcome from his two young daughters after 11 days fighting bushfires in Australia.

The footage begins as two girls realise their dad is arriving home, shouting “it’s dad!” and running outside to greet him.

As they wait for him to park his car the pair excitedly squeal and wave to him from the top of the driveway.

Dressed in uniform, the firefighter runs to his girls and gives them both a long hug.

The video ends as his excited dog, wagging its tail, also comes to greet him and leans itself against his legs.

It's not clear from the video where the family are located but bushfires have been raging throughout south east Australia since September.

Intense thunderstorms on Saturday brought relief to the parts of the country scorched by months of catastrophic fires.

More than a month’s rain fell in 24 hours in some of the worst-affected states, helping to contain blazes that have killed 29 people and more than a billion animals, and left 10 million hectares of scorched earth.

Despite the heavy rain, authorities were still battling nearly 100 fires.

A further two to four inches of rain could fall over the next few days, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said.
