Heathers TV show boss defends criticism of main bullies
Cult '80s film Heathers has had a 2018 makeover for its upcoming TV reboot, but not everyone is on board with some of the show's biggest changes.
One of the biggest changes the show makes is by re-casting the rich, white 'Heathers' of the original film from traditionally marginalised groups for the TV series, including the plus-sized ringleader (Melanie Field), a student who identifies as non-binary (Brendan Scannell) and an African American (Jasmine Mathews).
Following the release of the TV series' first full-length trailer (NSFW, you have been warned), this change has been criticised online by those who argue the show will 'demonise' these marginalised groups by making them "bullies".
that's the problem though...the heathers are the villains. they're gonna demonize the most marginalized characters and kill most of them off https://t.co/9TQndoYF9L

Realizing the Heathers tv adaptation is going to have a white straight couple killing marginalized characters because the white straight people see themselves as the victims AND we're supposed to side with the white straight people. pic.twitter.com/bysm09mzPs
