233 houses were evacuated in Nelson, New Zealand, due to heavy flooding on August 17, according to the Nelson Tasman Civil Defence.
Personnel from the New Zealand Defence Force were to patrol the evacuated area and several roads were closed.
The Mayor of Nelson, Rachel Reese, declared a state of emergency after heavy rainfall caused the Maitai river to burst its banks.
One resident from Terra Firma Engineering Limited recorded footage of the flooding and the engineering effort to unblock drainage pipes. “Wow! Didn’t expect to look out the window and see a river on my street!” he said. Credit: Terra Firma Engineering Limited via Storyful
- The man to the rescue. Good stuff, [? Heydrich. ?] [? Culvert's ?] blocked. Got ourselves a river. Got a debris flow in action here and a couple of big slips up on the hill there, and it's all just coming down.
