Forecasters say heavy rain is expected to batter Teesside as a yellow alert is issued.

The Met Office says Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland, Hartlepool and Darlington is braced for heavy downpours on Monday. They warn of potential disruption to roads and transport services as a result.

There is potential that 30-50mm of rainfall could develop in any part of the warning area, much of which could fall in six hours or less. Some locations could see 80-100 mm over the course of 12 to 24 hours.

Other areas of England and Wales are also covered by the warning, which is in place from midnight on Monday until midnight on Tuesday.

What to expect:

  • Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Possible power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses
  • Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Delays or cancellations to train and bus services are possible

Temperatures over the weekend are set to hit highs of 15C today (Saturday, September 21), and 14C on Sunday. It's expected to be cloudy and dull both days.

Monday's temperatures are forecast for highs of 14C and lows of 12C, according to the Met Office.
