People have been urged to avoid popular beaches and swimming spots across the region. Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), a charity and campaign group, has issued pollution alerts and warnings at locations across Somerset, Bristol and Dorset.

The region was battered by heavy rain over the weekend, leading to a weather warning and flood alerts. SAS has now warned that seven water spots should be avoided because of sewage pollution.

Sewage discharge is common after heavy rainfall as storm overflows are used to prevent drains becoming overwhelmed. An interactive map from SAS shows that there is sewage pollution at three areas in the region while a further four are at risk of pollution.

A sewage pollution alert means "storm sewage has been discharged from a sewer overflow in this location within the past 48 hours". Meanwhile, a "pollution risk forecast" means there is potential for sewage to be in the area.

Sewage pollution alerts are in place at the following locations:

  • Bristol Floating Harbour

  • Lyme Regis Church Cliff Beach

  • West Bay

The following beaches have pollution risk alerts in place:

  • Dunster North West

  • Burnham Jetty North

  • Weston-super-Mare Uphill Slipway

  • Weston Main
