Heavy Rain Sends 'Toxic' Foam Spilling From Bangalore's Varthur Lake

Foam was seen coming off Bangalore’s heavily polluted Varthur Lake on May 29 after heavy rain. According to local reports, the substance is toxic and caused by the large amounts of industrial effluent that flow into the lake.

The problem is a recurring one, with locals complaining of its dangers and the disruption it causes to businesses and traffic. A wire mesh has been erected around the lake in an attempt to contain it. Bangalore Development Authority commissioner Rakesh Singh was quoted in the Times of India as saying, “All authorities are aware of the problem. They need to give it deeper thought.” Credit: Twitter/raisaromer via Storyful
