Is Hellboy 3 coming - or is del Toro just trolling us?

The comic book version of Mike Mignola's Hellboy may be stuck in hell, but the anti-hero's third cinematic outing could just be that little bit closer.

Hellboy was brought to screen by writer and director Guillermo del Toro, first in 2004 and then again in 2008 for its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

And Guillermo has teased fans on Twitter with the possibility of Hellboy III, raising (ahem) hell in the process.

Del Toro turned to Twitter to ask fans whether they would want to see a new Hellboy movie - but really, he wasn't asking, giving the fans two options between 'yes' and 'hell yes'.

He also said that the poll will be "our chance to vote the right way in 2017". And we can't say we disagree.

"Informal poll," he said. "Let's see how many votes we get in 24 hours. Hellboy III?"

And the prospect of a threequel to the series looked even more promising later on, when the director revealed he had over 50,000 responses and promised a "serious sit down" with comic book creator Mike Mignola and Ron Perlman, who plays the iconic role " if the total reaches 100,000."

Squeal.

"Halfway there," he added. "100K and I promise a serious sit down w Mignola et Perlman!"

As of this morning, there were 90,000 responses - so it's all looking rather good indeed. However, it may be wise not to get too excited.

In October, Perlman said he had "given up" on the hopes of reprising his role as Hellboy, but we think the Right Hand of Doom still awaits.
