Hellboy 3 is definitely never going to happen

Guillermo del Toro has officially given up hope of ever making the long-awaited Hellboy 3 a reality.

The visionary director crushed the hearts of his most loyal fans on Twitter by revealing on Tuesday (February 21) that his recent meetings to revive the franchise came to absolutely nothing.

"Hellboy 3 Sorry to report: Spoke w all parties," he tweeted. "Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it."

That's particularly disappointing since del Toro seemed excited about the possibility of a new Hellboy movie mere weeks ago, when he asked more than 130,000 fans if they truly wanted it to happen.

The fan response was overwhelming and seemingly at least fostered a meeting between del Toro and the creative forces behind the Hellboy franchise soon after.

But it looks like no-one is sadder about the demise of Hellboy 3 than its star Ron Perlman, who responded to del Toro's announcement today with possibly the saddest tweet ever.

"Superhero seeks employment. Likes, pizza, cats, and the Marx bros," he wrote.

All the renewed hope and ultimate disappointment came just three months after Ron Perlman admitted he'd all but given up on playing Hellboy ever again.

"We don't talk about that anymore," he told fans at New York Comic-Con last autumn. "Because [Guillermo's] busy, and I'm busy. Maybe one day he's going to call and say, 'Hey, let's do it'. But for right now? We're happy discovering new worlds to conquer."

After seeing hope spring again and then be so quickly dashed, we'll just echo Hellboy himself with an: "Ah crap!"
