Henry Golding defends use of racist language in The Gentlemen

From Digital Spy

Henry Golding has defended Guy Ritchie's gangster movie The Gentlemen, which he starred in, and its use of racist language.

Golding played gangster Dry Eye in the movie, which also starred Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant and Michelle Dockery and followed a drug lord who was attempting to sell off his empire and encountering blackmail and schemes along the way.

The film attracted some criticism for its use of racist language but Golding has defended the film's script, saying that the offensive content is a realistic portrayal of the movie's characters.

Speaking to NME, he said: "If you think gangsters aren't going to be racist and go down to the lowest derogatory terminologies, I don't know what kind of world you live in. In this day and age of being PC, do you think that restricts art or creation?

"Because we have to pander to people who perhaps don't want racist words to be on screen or projected from someone's mouth; but in reality it's what happens. Are gangsters going to be nice to each other just because they don't want to hurt each other's feelings? I don't think so."

He went on to explain that he had never felt unsafe while filming, saying that boundaries were always in place.

"I felt as an Asian and as a man, those boundaries were never stepped over and it was always a safe set," he said. "If there is ever a time there isn't a safe set, you know, the hand goes up and a discussion is made."

The actor, who has starred in blockbusters including Crazy Rich Asians, Last Christmas and A Simple Favour, also revealed that he would be keen to take on the iconic role of James Bond after Daniel Craig departs in the upcoming No Time To Die.

"Of course I'd do it!" he said. "I think every actor in their right mind would be the first to say '100 per cent'. It's such a rich character to get hold of.

"Will it be a shake up after Craig retires? I think so, but you know, as a longtime fan of the series, I'm excited that they're carrying on and bringing new material to it."

Considering that the actor is about to star as the lead character in upcoming action movie Snake Eyes, which is a reboot of the GI Joe series, he's certainly set to prove his action star credentials.
