As Suits comes to an end, it will also fire the starting gun for its spin-off series Pearson.

That's because the first episode of the final season of the USA Network show will air on the same night that the new series premieres.

The network confirmed that the season 9 premiere will hit screens on Wednesday, July 17 at 9pm, followed by Pearson's first episode following at 10pm.

The new show will follow Gina Torres's titular character Jessica Pearson from Suits as she become the right hand woman to Chicago mayor Bobby Golec (Morgan Spector).

There she has to navigate the murky world of politics and try to fix what she can, while also trying to reconnect with her family.

While Suits may be coming to an end, one of its stars reckons that the series could have "gone a bit longer".

"I see where it could have gone a little bit longer, but I also see that nine years is, like… how often do any shows make it this far?" Gabriel Macht, who plays Harvey Specter, argued. "We have such a solid fanbase."

"It's all over the world, and for the fans that have stuck with the show for this long, they want it to go forever."

However, he added: "There's another side of me that says, 'This is a long time, and it was a great run, a fantastic run, and it's time to work out some of the other muscles.'

"I'm looking to strengthen some other creative elements in my life. It's a good thing to go and challenge yourself in other ways and tell some different stories, and try and play some characters that are the complete opposite of Harvey."

Suits airs on USA in the US and on Netflix in the UK.
