Ryan Gosling smirking as the Oscars' Best Picture mix-up played out was one of the defining images of this year's ceremony.

But it turns out that he wasn't amused by the mistake and instead was feeling relieved that it was just a simple card error, as he thought it was initially something more serious during the "surreal" moment.

"I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt," La La Land star Ryan told the crowd at the Adobe Summit.

"I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had the worst case scenario playing out in my head. And then I just heard, 'Oh Moonlight won', and I was so relieved that I started laughing."

Gosling added that he was "thrilled" that Moonlight had won as he'd worked with the team behind it before, and praised it for being "such a groundbreaking film".

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Barry Jenkins' coming-of-age movie had the lowest budget of all the Best Picture winners across the last 50 years, adjusted for inflation, at only $1.5 million.

And while Gosling might have found the mix-up entertaining, it led to the two accountants blamed for the error being given bodyguards for their protection.

PricewaterhouseCoopers took full responsibility for the error, and accountants Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz won't be invited back to the Oscars.
