It comes as no surprise that the long-awaited announcement of Episode 8's title as Star Wars: The Last Jedi kicked off an avalanche of speculation as to the meaning of the film's name.

And if you thought that the term 'the last Jedi' was familiar, well you would be right, as it appeared on screen as recently as 2015 – in the opening crawl to The Force Awakens.

"Luke Skywalker has vanished," it reads. "In his absence the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed."

There you have it. Not only did Rian Johnson know the title from the get go, but it's been hiding under our noses for the past year.

This isn't the first time that an official Star Wars story has been titled 'The Last Jedi', it's been used for various books and comics (as detailed in our breakdown of what The Last Jedi means).

Of course, just because Luke is the currently designated 'last Jedi', that doesn't mean that the new title refers directly or solely to him. Kylo Ren is a failed Jedi Knight, and all signs point to Rey taking up the baton/lightsaber of the order.

Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran, Benicio del Toro and Andy Serkis will star in the film. The late Carrie Fisher will also feature in the film, which wrapped before her death in December.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on December 15.
