Hero Binmen Saved This Cat That Was Just Minutes Away From Being Incinerated

Hero binmen saved a cat that was just minutes away from being incinerated after they discovered it inside a huge mound of stinking rubbish.

The two workers were getting ready to burn food waste in Stockholm, Sweden, when they heard the sound of the distressed puss coming from their truck’s holding compartment.

The tabby, named Melker, was buried deep inside the garbage.

The team spent more than half an hour sifting through five tonnes of rotting food before finally pulling the cat to safety.

Bekir Mercil, part of the team (pictured above), said: “If we’d not gone to save the cat it would have headed for the incinerator, and you can just imagine what would have happened.

"We had a shovel to remove the waste as carefully as we could without doing any harm and a broom to try to get the kitten out.

"Eventually we got it out and saved it which was a great feeling.

"It’s a lovely cat as well - if we didn’t already have two dogs we would have taken it for ourselves but thankfully there’s a home out there for him already."

It’s unclear how the cat got trapped inside the truck.

The cat was later taken to a nearby animal shelter before Maria Carlsson, a staff member from a veterinary clinic in Vallentuna, decided to adopt him.
