A Scots have-a-go hero heroically stepped in to defend a man and woman after they were attacked in Glasgow on Tuesday afternoon.

Dan Rezkalla, 37, a council worker from Shettleston, said that the individual attacked a man and woman sitting on a bench on Sauchiehall Street with a length of wood.

Following the incident - which happened close to Buchanan Galeries around 1 pm - a 32-year-old man was raced to hospital, reports Glasgow Live.

Dan, who works as a local area coordinator for older people at Glasgow City Council, was leaving Caffe Nero at the time of the attack. He said: “I could see a man walking from a distance away with a big wooden stick in his hand.

“I just waited to see what he was up to. He approached a man and a lady sitting on a bench. He was talking to them angrily and the woman said ‘Please leave us alone,’ and then he started attacking them.

“He was hitting them with the wood, and as he was attacking him the piece of wood fell on the floor, so I went and picked it up and took it away.”

Dan said he was chased and attacked by the ruthless man, leaving him with injuries to his head including a lump on his forehead he describes as “not serious at all.” Dan added: “He tried to chase me and attack me, and then eventually walked away.”

Dan described the individual as “very dangerous,” adding he feared the man would start attacking more people if nobody stepped in to help. He said: “People were sitting around, watching. I could hear people say ‘Don’t get involved’.

“I was with someone who told me ‘Don’t get involved, just walk away,’ but I couldn’t while he was attacking the poor woman and the man. They had not done anything.”

He said the 32-year-old man was taken to hospital by ambulance, adding: “He was attacked so violently, he hit him all over. There was blood everywhere.”

Dan left the length of wood with the staff at Caffe Nero.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 1pm on Tuesday, 29 October, to a report of a disturbance in the Buchanan Street area of Glasgow.

“A 32-year-old man was injured and taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
