An off-duty husband and wife team heroically saved the lives of a couple trapped inside a burning Staffordshire house. PC Mark Sigley and DC Katy Sigley braved a 'dangerous' inferno to rescue the married pair from their Stafford home.

The Staffordshire Police duo were driving home when they spotted smoke billowing from the property. After calling 999, Mark and Katy forced open the front door and tried to establish if someone was stuck inside. At this point, the garage was completely engulfed in flames.

A woman was found downstairs and Katy helped to bring her to safety. The woman then told Katy that her husband was upstairs. Mark tried to find him, but the fire was "too dangerous", said the police force.

Mark and Katy then told the neighbours to get out after realising the wind was blowing the flames in their direction. They also managed to reassure the husband trapped upstairs by speaking to him while firefighters went inside.

He was later taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. Since the incident in June, both the man and his wife have made a recovery. The couple have since been recognised at the Staffordshire Police force awards.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "Katy and Mark’s swift and brave actions undoubtedly saved the lives of both occupants that evening." Both were shortlisted for the 'Excellence in Bravery' award following the incident.
