Heroes rescue passengers from burning SUV after drink-driver crashes car into tree

Two men have been called heroes after rescuing two people from a burning car.

A security guard and a passer-by sprang into action when the vehicle crashed into a tree in Jinhua City in Zhejiang, China.

CCTV footage showed that the passer-by, Zhou Xianjun, 31, returned to the flaming wreckage four times to save a woman trapped in the passenger seat.

The driver, who later admitted to drink driving, ploughed his SUV into a tree in the early hours of the morning.

Another female passenger was flung from the rear window and landed on the pavement. She died from her injuries.

The front end of the car became engulfed in flames after the crash.

The driver, believed to be 29, climbed out of the vehicle and telephoned for help.

First, the passing security guard ran to the car after realising there were people inside. He dragged one man from the back seat.

Zhou then arrived at the scene and saved the woman in the passenger seat, dragging her into the middle of the road despite the flames.

Three people were taken to hospital for treatment – the two who were dragged free survived with broken bones, but the woman flung from the vehicle was pronounced dead.

Zhou, who works at a hair salon, said: ‘I was terrified. That’s why I was scared away by the flames, which grew bigger and bigger.

“But I saw the woman trapped in the passenger seat. The fire had already reached her body and she would’ve been burned to death had I not saved her.

‘The passenger-side door was mangled from the crash, so I couldn’t open it. I pulled the woman out of the car from the back seat.’

Police may charge the driver with drink-driving and manslaughter.
