Avengers: Endgame subtitles for ‘inaudible’ scene may set up X-Men character’s arrival in MCU

A small scene in Avengers: Endgame might set up the arrival of a beloved X-Men character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The moment in question arrives when Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) travel back in time to a SHIELD base in 1970.

Cap uses the opportunity to see what Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is up to and, when he finds her, she is seen to be having a secret conversation with an unnamed agent.

When originally watching the scene, viewers probably strugged to hear what was being said, as their words are essentially inaudible.

However, those re-watching the film with subtitles will notice that the pair are actually discussing something that may herald the mutants’ introduction into the MCU.

As highlighted by Reddit user cbfw86, this is what is said:

Agent: “They’re trying, ma’am, but Braddock’s unit has been stopped by lightning strikes.”

Peggy: “I’ll look at the weather projections.”

Agent: “It’s not lightning strikes we’re looking at.”

The fact that Marvel even gave these words their own subtitles indicate their importance – and, fans are now wondering whether this is a reference to X-Men character Storm.

Storm is a mutant with weather controlling abilities, who was played by Halle Berry in the Fox franchise.

While her appearance in a scene set in 1970 would raise some continuity errors with the Marvel timeline, it certainly makes sense for fans to believe this is a nod to her – especially considering the X-Men are imminently arriving in the MCU.

Interestingly, Inverse points out that this scene was originally longer in the Endgame script with more emphasis placed on the character of Braddock.

In the Marvel Universe, Braddock is the superhero known as Captain Britain. There are currently no plans to introduce him on screen.

In July 2019, studio president Kevin Feige announced the X-Men would become a part of the franchise, but did not go into more detail at the time.

It was later reported that their induction could clash with the return of the Avengers in a film that would not be released until Phase Six, which is expected to begin in the mid-2020s. Other reports predicted Wolverine will appear as early as Phase Five.

It’s looking like bosses are officially executing plans to bring them into the fold – thanks to a leaked set video, it’s been all but confirmed that Wolverine and co will play a part in new Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Solider.

Regardless of whether or not this scene in Endgame was referencing Storm, it makes you wonder how many hidden subtitles for every other Marvel film reveals references to other superhero characters.
