The 'hidden gem' North East Christmas market 15 minutes from Newcastle makes best in UK list
It had been dubbed by people in the region as a 'must visit' every festive season and, while it might not be one of the country's best known Christmas Markets, Durham's has made it onto a list of the best in the UK ahead of its return for 2024.
When it comes to Christmas Markets in the UK, many people instinctively think of the large ones in the likes of Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham, or perhaps Winter Wonderland in London. However, there's one on our doorstep that has now earned some national praise.
As it gears up to come back for another year on December 6, Durham Christmas Market is featured in a new consumer guide from Which., who have based their rankings on the places that were also voted as the best cities in the UK. Durham's market offers attractions in both the Market Place and on Palace Green, with the area close to the world famous Durham Cathedral home to Craft and Producers’ Marquee.

The majority of the market is free to enter, but there is a £4.50 charge to enter the crafts marquee. Beginning its critique of the market in Durham, less than 15 minutes on the train from Newcastle, Which write: "Another quiet yet lovely affair is Durham’s Christmas Market. This verdant, historic city – just over ten minutes from Newcastle on the train – won second place in our small-cities category, and was rated highly for its cultural sights and lack of crowds"
The description about Durham Christmas Market promises visitors they can find 'gift wrapping, sweet treats, hobby supplies and imaginative gifts, including locally made hot sauce, reworked vintage clothing and handcrafted home decorations' with plenty of festive food up for grabs as well.
One of the highlights of this year's Christmas Market in Durham will be the Children's Lantern Parade, which is taking place on the afternoon of Saturday, December 7.
