A person has died after being hit by a train at a north London Tube station.

Emergency services rushed to Highbury and Islington station just before 12.30pm on Tuesday.

The person, whose age and gender is not yet known, died at the scene after being hit by a Victoria line train, British Transport Police said.

The station was evacuated while emergency crews dealt with the incident.

One witness Matthew Green wrote on Twitter: “Just been evacuated at high speed from Highbury & Islington tube station. Everyone kept it together but was secretly terrified. No idea what is going on. Lots of police and ambulances.”

Another person added: “All of us have been moved out of Highbury and Islington station due to emergency evacuation.”

The Victoria line is severely delayed due to the incident.

A BTP spokesman said: "Officers and paramedics attended but sadly the person died.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify them and inform their next of kin.

"The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious."

A statement posted on TfL’s website read: “Severe delays due to an earlier customer incident at Highbury and Islington. London Underground tickets are being accepted on London Overground, Great Northern, Greater Anglia, Southeastern, South Western Railway and local bus services via any reasonable route.”
