The local areas of England with the highest number of new COVID-19 cases have been revealed.

The figures show Leicester still has the highest number of new infections but the rate has dropped from 127.2 in the seven days to 5 July to 104.4 in the seven days to 12 July.

It was 143.6 in the seven days to 28 June.

The rate of new cases is expressed as the number per 100,000 population.

Second on the list is Pendle, where the rate has gone up from 14.2 to 74.4, and where 68 new cases have been recorded in the seven days to 12 July.

On Wednesday, 85 more people from all settings were reported to have died from coronavirus in the UK, which means 45,053 in total have now succumbed to the infection.

The Department for Health and Social Care also revealed 291,911 people have tested positive for the virus across Britain, with another 538 new cases.

Prime minister Boris Johnson has pledged there will be an independent inquiry into the government’s handling of the crisis.

It was also revealed this week from 24 July wearing a face-covering in shops and supermarkets in England would be mandatory.

The list of new cases is based on Public Health England figures updated on 15 July on the government’s coronavirus online dashboard.

Data for the most recent three days (13 to 15 July) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

The new cases are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Here is the list in full, showing the rate of new cases in the seven days to July 12, followed by the equivalent figure for the previous seven days to July 5:
